Daughter of Maurice, a ruler, Belle lived a good life until The Ogre Wars ravaged the town. Belle was to be married to Gaston when Rumplestiltskin is called to Maurice's castle to protect the town. His payment... Belle's servitude. She is taken to Rumplestiltskin's castle "Dark Castle" where she is put into the dungeon.
After holding her captive for several months, Rumplestiltskin grew fond of Belle, and allowed her to go into town on the pretext of fetching him straw for spinning gold. Belle did not realize that he was testing her affection. While traveling on the road, Belle encountered the Evil Queen, who encouraged her to kiss Rumplestiltskin, as "true love's kiss" would cure him of his evil.
Against Rumplestiltskin's assumptions (as well as her own) Belle returns to the castle and kisses him, causing Rumplestiltskin to begin to revert to his human form. Shocked by her actions, he incorrectly believed that Belle was working with the Queen when she stutters that she learned from a woman that kissing him would break his curse. He believes the Evil Queen was behind it, trying to take his powers away.
Refusing to believe Belle's claims that she truly loves him, he imprisons her in the dungeon, later telling her to leave his castle and never return. Belle returns home where she is less than welcome. Her father attempts to purify her while her heart still aches.
Storybrooke History- The daughter of Moe the florist and unknowingly the servant and lover of Rumpelstiltskin, Bell is kidnapped by the mayor and locked up underneath the hospital. She is eventually released by Jefferson. He tells her to find Mr. Gold, who is actually Rumpelstiltskin, and to tell Gold that Regina held her captive.

Belle had spent a great deal of the time in the dungeon at the Dark Castle thinking silently. She had saved her village. That was what she had to remember. Even if she died here in this chamber, she had helped her fathers people.
Still, when he finally returned and let her out of her cell, Belle was relieved. She had not wanted to die alone. Belle went to work as soon as possible cleaning his home, his clothes, making his food and drink. Anything he had asked, she did.
Now she sat back in the dungeon about the man...who claimed he was not a man. He was so angry with her and she had meant no harm. She had only hoped to help him.
Belle thought of many different things. The day she had broken the tea cup. She had been so nervous as she knelt there on the floor by the table and holding the cup in her hands. "I'm so sorry..." She had told him frightened that he was going to be angry. Perhaps strike her for it. But no, he had just sat there and watched her. "It's just a cup." He had told her banishing her worry.
The time she had fallen from the ladder when she had been trying to open the curtains. How quick he had been to catch her. And then excuse her clumsiness.
The times he had made her laugh and brought joy to her life. She had fallen in love with him and had thought that he felt the same way. How wrong she had been. Belle did not know what was going to become of her now. He had not spoken to her since. How could everything go so wrong so quickly?
