Storybrooke History: When the curse hit and transported everyone to Storybrooke, Red became Ruby Lucas- an unruly twentysomething desperate to leave the small hamlet of Storybrooke for as long as she could remember but unable to because of her grandmother's heart attack. Instead, she worked as a waitress at Granny's diner and continued living with Granny at their Bed & Breakfast. Ruby's relationship with her grandmother was strained, as Granny didn't approve of her clothing (or lack-there-of), drag queen-esque makeup or provocative behavior. That is, until tensions finally reached a head and Ruby quit with the intention of leaving town. With that option thwarted, as buses out of town didn't happen and Ruby's car was still out of commission from when her friend Ashley Boyd crashed it, Ruby took up Mary Margaret Blanchard's offer to temporarily move in with her and Emma Swan. She took a position as Emma's assistant at the sheriff's station and all seemed to be going well. She even located a missing and unconscious David Nolan in the forest. Ruby's law enforcement career was cut short when she discovered a box containing a human heart at the toll bridge. Though the discovery impressed Emma, Ruby was deeply freaked out. She decided to return to work at the diner, a place she loved where a good day didn't mean ruining someone's life. The entire experience had a profound effect on Ruby. She began wearing less makeup and less revealing clothing. Most importantly, her relationship with her grandmother began to improve as Ruby trusted herself to take on more responsibility.
Fantasy History: Red grew up in a little cottage on the edge of a village with her Granny. Unbeknownst to Red, her mother and grandmother were werewolves- a condition that was passed onto her. Red went to live with Granny when her mother was killed by a hunting party. It wasn't until her thirteenth year that Red began changing every Wolf's Time. Even then, it would be years until Red knew the truth. In order to protect her, Granny made a deal with a sorcerer and obtained a red cloak that would keep Red from becoming a wolf. Without knowing the consequences, Red often removed the cloak and her wolf began killing local farm animals. When Red was older, she fell in love with her childhood friend Peter. Granny did not approve of their relationship and often kept Red on a tight leash (pun intended). But her love for Peter was strong and they took whatever stolen moments they could get with each other, even going so far as planning to run away together. One year during Wolf's Time, Red found Snow White hiding in their chicken coop. They became fast friends and when the wolf massacred a hunting party, they decided to go and kill the wolf themselves. Evidence they found in the woods pointed to Peter but Red was certain that Peter didn't know that he was the wolf. She switched cloaks with Snow so that she could go warn him. By the time Granny realized what had happened and they reached Red, she had already transformed into the wolf and devoured her love. Snow helped Red escape the approaching hunting party, creating a strong bond between the two. Over time, Red learned to control the wolf and often used it to help Snow White, earning her spot on the War Council against the Evil Queen.
Anything Else: The curse affected Red by taking away her self-esteem, making Ruby very insecure. Ruby deals with that insecurity by dressing in revealing clothing, hiding behind her makeup and looking for approval by flirting with lots of men.
Sample Post: Ruby never felt so exhausted in her life and she went through the motions of preparing for the diner's morning rush with even less grace than usual. As an entire bin of cutlery slipped out of her hand and crashed to the floor, she could almost hear Granny's barbed chiding about how a bull in a china shop would be comparable to a hungover Ruby in the diner...of course, this particular morning too much alcohol was not the cause of the mayhem being inflicted on the silverware settings.
She was supposed to be on her way to Boston. Not in the diner, not in Storybrooke, not in Maine at all. Yet here she was, after spending the entire night at Storybrooke General Hospital. A heart attack. The old woman had to have a freaking heart attack just hours before Ruby supposed to be on her way to sweet freedom. Part of her almost believed that Granny had done it on purpose, out of spite or pride or whatever. After all, when it happened Granny had been standing in the room watching Ruby pack and expressing her deep disappointment in Ruby's "horrible life choices". Apparently she really was as big of a screw up as she thought. A fabulously stylish screw up, but a screw up nonetheless.
Ruby could feel her face start to flush. She couldn't ever remember being more angry than she was now and she let the feeling flow freely. Anger was a much more pleasant emotion than the fear, uncertainty and guilt hiding beneath it, so that was what Ruby focused on as she slammed down a fresh pot of coffee. She quietly cursed under her breath as drops of the hot liquid sloshed out of the top and scalded her hand. It was going to be one of those days.
